Sun Salutation Marathon
Yoga Studio Performs 108 Sun Salutations to Benefit Inner-City Kids
Upper Georgetown –Spiral Flight Yoga Studio celebrates the Autumn Equinox by performing a series of 108 sun salutations (a flowing series of yoga poses) on Sunday, September 26th from 1-4:15pm at 1826 Wisconsin Avenue, NW. Proceeds from the event will benefit The Patricia M. Sitar Center for the Arts, a multidisciplinary community arts center that reaches out to children from low-income families.
The ancient Indian practice of performing 108 sun salutations during the times of equinox and solstice honors the change of the seasons, acknowledges the transitions of nature's sun and earth energy, and purges the body of toxins. Sunday’s participants will do sets of 12 salutations followed by 5-10 minutes of restorative poses and relaxation. Participants are welcome to do as few or as many sets as they wish. If you would like to participate, please call 202-965-1645 or email info@spiralflightyoga.com.
“The Sitar Center is so excited and grateful to be the beneficiary of Spiral Flight’s innovative event” said Emma White, Director of Communications at the Sitar Center. “We are dedicated to giving our community’s children a safe place to explore their artistic gifts, and we view yoga as an art form that honors and reveals the creative connection between each person’s body, mind and spirit - - this event is a wonderful way to clue more community members into our mission.”
Spiral Flight, a Center for Yoga, Healing and the Arts, provides an eclectic mix of yoga and healing therapies for all practitioners to find strength, flexibility and balance of body, mind and spirit. One of DC’s original yoga studios, Spiral Flight exhibits the work of upcoming artists and offers various programs for children. In 2003, Spiral Flight was one of DC’s first yoga studios to offer yoga to children (2-18 yrs.) and recently expanded the children’s program after merging with Budding Yogis, DC’s only kids’ only yoga center. “Spiral Flight is thrilled to work with the Sitar Center to support their programs for children and the arts and to have found an organization with a mission congruent to ours,” says Cristin Tighe, Spiral Flight’s Director.
The Sun Salutation event comes on the heels of the grand opening of the Sitar Center’s new home at 1700 Kalorama Road, NW. The state-of-the-art facility provides arts instruction in music, dance, visual art, creative writing and drama to over 200 students from the Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights and Mount Pleasant neighborhoods. Programs are enriched by partnering arts organizations such as The Washington Ballet, Washington National Opera, National Symphony Orchestra, Corcoran Museum and College of Art and Design, Levine School of Music, CityDance Ensemble and Arena Stage. ####
